Written in Brooklyn is a supportive, creative community made up of diverse individuals coming together for one reason: we fucking love storytelling. We firmly believe in order to flourish we need to lean on each other, share with each other, and validate each other’s creative expression.

Carly Ann Filbin
Carly’s purpose in life is to use storytelling as a tool to understand ourselves, connect with each other, entertain, and build community. She believes if more people were able to process and articulate their feelings, and have their life experiences listened to and validated, the world would be a much better (and funnier) place.

Luis Machuca
Luis Machuca found Written in Brooklyn while looking for a release. A friend urged him to take a storytelling classes and write the secrets he’s carried most of his life. One class, a great teacher, and talented students gave Luis more than what he hoped for: community.

Tim Dunn
TIMOTHY DUNN has been a “creative-type” his whole life, and his passions for theatre, acting, directing and writing have helped him happily call NYC “home” for the past 20 years. Coming from the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, Timothy understands the importance of belonging to a creative community, and he is thrilled for the opportunity to work and create alongside Carly and the other “Written in Brooklyn” creative weirdos! Erin stumbled into Written in Brooklyn while looking for something, anything really, and found an inspiring and supportive enclave of writers and storytellers. Written in Brooklyn swooped in and saved this damsel (creative) in distress from the pandemic that tried to suck her juices dry. WiB has given Molly an outlet, a platform, and unparalleled community. Through her stories, Molly aims to make people feel connected to her drippy heart and nostalgia, somewhere between heartbreak and hysterical laughter. Listen up!

As a writer Joy, never thought she would take a writing class, but after struggling to create for years -a friend suggested Written in Brooklyn “because you will love the teacher.” After one class, Joy felt creative and alive. She’s continued to take classes, but not just because she was voraciously writing, she also found the greatest community she has ever been a part of.

Jonathan Bender
New York native Jonathan Bender discovered the Written in Brooklyn community by the way of Instagram's algorithm in a time where he was creatively stunted. Jonathan's slice-of-life storytelling explores the humor in trusting your own direction, while focusing on the moments that can be overlooked. Miranda Gruss
Despite Miranda winning an essay contest in fourth grade (she wrote about Memorial Day) AND a personal essay she wrote in high school that was in her English Teacher’s words “The best narrative essay I’ve seen in my twenty years of teaching”, It was Written in Brooklyn that made her finally believe in her writing ability. Carly’s classes and insight helped her figure out her “voice” and gave her the building blocks to build her own writing practice. Now, she’s what they call “an emerging writer” - meaning she writes unsold screenplays and has a Substack.

Kathryn is an LA-based actor, writer, and storyteller who came to Written in Brooklyn to develop her craft. Working with Carly and this community of open, engaging, supportive artists, she continues to hone her creative voice. She’s grateful to continue to be part of the Written in Brooklyn community from across the country.

Lillie Westbrook discovered Written in Brooklyn after appearing on Carly’s live show, Young Hot Sluts. With Carly’s guidance and the community’s encouragement, Lillie finally started thinking of herself as a writer again after a years-long hiatus from creativity. She has found her voice, her stage presence, and a few long-forgotten anecdotes through WiB.

Micaeli is a poet and creative nonfiction writer based in Washington D.C.The knowledge and heart shared within Written in Brooklyn’s classes and community have kept her creative embers lit and provided her with artistic allyship and accountability while working a full-time corporate job and raising two babies. Her first poetry chapbook, for the hush times, is coming this summer.
